Meet the Team

Devin Sender
Owner and Head Coach
For the past thirteen years my working career has focused on the sport of Climbing. I have owned and operated two successful companies in the Climbing industry, namely Rockfit Functional Training Facility (based in Sandton, Johannesburg) and INSIDEedge Climbing(training out of CityROCK). My personal goal is to see Sport Climbing achievethe same status as other mainstream sports in South Africa.
In my current position as Owner and Head Coach of INSIDEedge Climbing, I have created a business that provides a platform for athletes of all ages to participate in Sport Climbing for fitness and fun, health and wellness, and to compete for awards and medals. Our club is currently one of the largest climbing clubs in Gauteng, with 115 members. We have developed both junior and senior high performance squads, where many athletes have earned their Gauteng and Protea Colours. Last year i had one athlete representing South Africa at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
The term “Growing Climbing” is used time and time again when the community talks about our sport. I am confident that over the last seven years our club has been hugely successful in growing climbing, by increasing the number of members ten fold, by bringing more schools to the walls, by employing young coaches, in selling awareness to new people about the benefits and advantages of Climbing, by instructing multiple successful competition performances, and in creating a space where Climbing is thriving today.

Willem Christoff Buys
Staff Manager & Climbing Coach
About Willem
I’ve been climbing since 2019, with bouldering quickly becoming my passion. There’s something raw and expressive about solving problems on stone with only shoes, chalk, and determination. Over the years, I’ve helped develop outdoor areas like Golden Gate, Roodepoort, Middelburg, The Wilds, and Hampi, establishing over 32 boulder problems and bolting four routes.
In terms of personal performance, I’ve sent 24 boulders graded 7C and seven at 7C+. On rope, my proudest ascent is Monster (29) in Waterval Boven.
Professionally, I’ve been a full-time route setter since 2020, blending creativity with technical skill. I trained alongside three IFSC route setters at an international clinic, which deepened my understanding of setting for all levels. I also coach top-level athletes, design training programs, and have set for over 10 provincial and national competitions.

Katleho Pobe
Climbing Coach
About KP
I started climbing in 2009, and over the years, it has become both my passion and profession. I’ve been setting routes for the past nine years, and in 2023, I took on the role of Head Setter at CityROCK Johannesburg. Since 2022, I’ve also been coaching at Inside Edge Climbing, helping others grow in the sport that’s shaped so much of my life. On the competitive side, I’ve earned 15 provincial and 9 national medals, and had the honor of representing South Africa in four Youth World Championships and three World Cups. As a climber, I’ve pushed my personal limits with a lead ascent of grade 32 and have bouldered up to 7C+.

Hein De Lange
Climbing Coach
About Hein
I started climbing in May 2016 at “The East Rand Climbing Wall”. It was a bouldering gym and I enjoyed the challenges it presented me. I led my first 20 outdoors, at Bronkies after only one month of climbing. I still remember it very well as I took a big whipper on it (Pom Pom Dominatrix).
I did my first first 24/7a in 2 months of climbing and my first 27/7b+ in 6 months of climbing. I have done about 17 x 24’s and 15 x 27’s in the last 9 years. In 2021 with a renewed vigour I made the commitment to work toward sending my first 8a/30, with the help of training partners I have been able to send 2 8a’s between 2024 and 2025.the end goal of climbing at least 1 x 9a.I started coaching in April 2024 as I wanted to teach other people what I have learned and still continue to learn in my climbing career.
My favourite styles of climbing:
1. Indoors – bouldering/moonboard.
2. Outdoors – Sport climbing.
NB: “I love outdoor sport climbing and I live for it.”

David Shore
Climbing Coach
About David
I have been climbing since late 2018. Of the 6 years I have been climbing, 5 have been as a full-time route setter at CityRock. This has given me a greater understanding of the basics of climbing movement and how to develop as a beginner.
Besides setting, I have also been helping develop some of the outdoor climbing crags in SA. I have opened 25+ boulders in Golden Gate and I have bolted routes in Magalies, helped create and maintain paths and crags. Since the first time I went outdoor I was hooked and try get out there as often as I can.
I started choacing in February 2025, which is the most recent way for me to help the SA climbing community grow.

Anthony Veil
Climbing Coach
About Anthony
My name is Anthony Vail, a 19-year-old climber who began my journey in 2021 while attending Northcliff High School. From my first visit to CityRock, I was drawn to the individual nature of climbing, where personal growth and self-reliance are key. Since then, I have earned full colours and an award for four years of dedication to the sport, and I now coach at InsideEdge, helping young climbers develop their technique and route-reading skills. Indoors, my current flash grade is 7b, and my send grade is 7b+ on boulder walls. On high walls, I consistently flash and send 23, with plans to soon achieve 26. I am currently projecting grades 28 and 29.My outdoor experience is still growing, with a highest send of 25. In competitions, my top result has been 3rd place in speed at last year’s national selection event. I favour slow, technical, powerful, and controlled climbing, while fast-paced coordination and slab climbs remain my biggest areas for improvement.

Luke Westmen
Climbing Coach
About Luke
I first discovered climbing in grade 4 at the age of 9, when my school offered it as an after-school sport. I figured I’d give it a try, and by the following year, I was competing whenever I had the chance—and quickly realized I was pretty good at it. Over the past two years, I’ve consistently podiumed at national selection events, which led to my selection to represent my country at the 2024 Youth World Championships in China, as well as two World Cups in 2025. Outdoors, my most notable achievement so far is sending Pit Fighter, a grade 31 lead climb, in December last year. I’ve also been coaching for the past two years, and when it comes to style, anything dynamic is my favorite—I’ve always been naturally strong in that area.
